Staff Training Interventions to Improve End-of-Life Care of Nursing Home Residents: A Systematic Review

AbstractObjectives The aim was to review evidence from all randomized controlled trials (RCTs) using palliative care education or staff training as an intervention improve nursing home residents' quality of life (QOL) dying (QOD) reduce burdensome hospitalizations. Design A systematic with a narrative summary. Setting and Participants Residents in homes other long-term facilities. Methods We searched MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, the Cochrane Library, Scopus, Google Scholar, references known articles, previous reviews, recent volumes key journals. RCTs were included review. Methodologic assessed. Results search yielded 932 articles after removing duplicates. Of them, 16 cluster fulfilled inclusion criteria for analysis. There great variety interventions respect learning methods, intensity, complexity, length training. Most featured elements besides In 6 high-quality trials, only 1 showed reduction hospitalizations, whereas among moderate-quality 2 suggested None effects on QOL QOD. Staff reported improved QOD trial. Conclusions Implications Irrespective means training, there surprisingly few QOL, QOD, Further studies are needed explore reasons behind these findings.
